Per Unholy il suo nuovo brano, Sam Smith ha riunito a sé le star della produzione ILYA (Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez), Cirkut (Nicki Minaj, Rihanna), Omer Fendi (Lil Nas X, The Kid Laroi), Jimmy Napes, Blake Slatkin (Lizzo), oltre che la regina del pop Kim Petras.
In un’intervista concessa al NME, Smith ha spiegato il processo creativo e il significato del brano:
«Unholy è stata prodotta in Giamaica ed è stato uno dei momenti creativi più gloriosi che abbia mai vissuto come artista. […] È stato così catartico e liberatorio sperimentare in questo modo e buttare via le regole. È stato anche un onore lavorare con Kim e assistere alla sua genialità. Questa canzone parla della liberazione dalle grinfie dei segreti altrui.»
Registrato in Giamaica, Unholy è il singolo che anticipa il suo attesissimo quarto album in studio (la cui data di pubblicazione è prevista per il 27 gennaio 2023).
Collage sonoro a più voci, un evidente appeal da club. Queste le peculiarità di questo pezzo che sembra denunciare un marito traditore che lascia moglie e figli a casa per divertirsi, ispirandosi al locale di LA Sunset Strip club, il famoso The Body Shop.
